ReadThemAll

A Free GPL document reading software for your Palm (or any other PalmOS-compatible handheld)

New: try ReadTheLine, a Windows PC software implementing an innovative scrolling derived from the scrolling of ReadThemAll

Latest version: 1.9

Quick description

ReadThemAll is a free GPL (General Public License) document reader for Palm-powered handhelds that offers two pioneering auto-scroll options:

Note: "ReadThemAll" is not a trademark, it's just a unique way to identify the program on the Internet. Sometimes it is referred as "Read Them All" or "RTA" but the three words spelled together are preferred.

Open-sourcing note (dec 2004)

I've made a decision to make ReadThemAll open-sourced software for a reason. I was impressed by the open-source idea, especially after taking part in this kind of activity by myself (DiddleBugHR software).

ReadThemAll-scroll vs standard auto-scroll

The auto-scroll feature in other readers moves text up the screen pixel-by-pixel. It looks like a defective teleprompter because your handheld doesn't update the image quickly. So the image is moving up the screen and FLASHING I think this is the reason a lot of people don't like to read on their palm pilot. It's annoying! Not only is it distracting… it causes severe eyestrain because your eyes are forced to move in an unnatural pattern:

Read this line… imagine it's flashing… and when you get to the end… read it again!

That's exactly the way your eyes are forced to move with standard auto-scroll.

ReadThemAll uses a revolutionary concept that enables your eyes to move the same way they do when reading this page… the same way they do when reading a regular ink-on paper page. While you read lines on one part of the page, ReadThemAll is refreshing lines on the other part. When you get to the end of the page, instead of having to press a button (to turn to the next page) you just move your eyes to the top of the page where the lines have been replaced with the next page and start all over again. It's a completely natural way to read.

Actual animated illustration

ReadThemAll animation

The animated picture to the left shows the concept implemented in ReadThemAll (30k). It is an animated screen-shot so it looks just like it appears on the Palm-powered handheld. There is also an old animated GIF (160k) that shows the same principle but with a larger screen layout..

You can also look at an animated screenshot of the "spotlight-scroll" (Animated gif, 130 kb). Note that the actual effect when using this kind of auto-scrolling depends upon various factors including the lighting conditions. I can only additionally tell that I prefer using "spotlight-scroll" at the moment for reading my books.
